More than 1,150 students recently had the opportunity to enjoy live musical experiences provided by the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute’s New Harmonies Exhibit.
On Nov. 18, the Orchestra hosted a visit by the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet. Then, on Nov. 19, the Orchestra concert included a performance by the Troup County Elementary School Chorus, under the direction of Debbie Ogle.
Nearly 1,100 fifth grade students from around Troup County gathered in two sessions at Callaway Auditorium to hear the musicians from the Atlanta Symphony. Consisting of two trumpets, one French horn, one trombone and one tuba, the quintet performed a broad variety of music, discussed the unique features of their respective instruments and took questions from the students.
This was a wonderful opportunity for my students,” said Susanna Dellinger, a fifth grade teacher at Lafayette Christian School. “We are grateful for the chance to participate.”
Ahmad Mayes, Manager of Community Programs for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, was pleased with the event saying, “It was our pleasure to perform for so many students in LaGrange.”
On Nov.19, the LSO welcomed a chorus comprised of nearly 90 fourth and fifth grade students from around Troup County. Led by Debbie Ogle, the chorus performed classic selections chosen to reflect the roots of American music.
“I am thrilled with the work of these young musicians. Performing with the Orchestra was a great experience they and their parents will remember for years to come,” said Ogle.
“Providing educational experiences is at the heart of everything we do,” said Dave Marler, LaGrange Symphony executive director. “For 25 years, the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra has been creating memorable moments of music through concerts, educational initiatives and enriching musical experiences for the entire community. We are grateful for the support of our corporate partners and donors whose contributions allow us to continue these important initiatives.”
