"Today we (The Musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra) voted to send a lead gift of $16,000 to the Musicians of the Atlanta Symphony, symbolizing $1,000 per month of lock out from October 2012 through January 2014. We survived the siege with tremendous support from ICSOM, along with many other believers in great music!" We are appalled and mystified that despite the example of our own cautionary tale, the Atlanta Symphony management has locked out not only their musicians, but audiences as well. The entire Minnesota community is all too familiar with the mutual suffering a lockout causes. Our own example has proven that coercion, hostility, misinformation and low expectations spell disaster for a first class arts institution. Such “leadership” leads to loss of talent, loss of relevance and loss of community support. Enough is enough. We hope that progress can be made quickly and a resolution reached that will sustain the high level of artistry that is the Atlanta Symphony. We call on others to join us in supporting these fine musicians in any and all ways possible. Find them on Facebook at ATL Symphony Musicians. |
