Mahler 9 takes an army of a woodwind section to put on. It calls for 18 separate musicians. As you may know, the ASO's woodwind section at full strength has 16 musicians. We aren't quite back up to 16 players yet, so this week's performance requires us to rely heavily on our fabulous substitute musician pool to fill out the empty seats as well as make up the fifth flute and clarinet parts. Any time you hear a piece by Mahler, anywhere around the world, you are hearing the strength of an orchestra and its substitute/extra musicians. Thank you to our subs, and we can't wait to perform this wonderful piece with you this weekend!
