Our Robert Shaw's 100 Birthday Concert at Carnegie Hall with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus review is in!
"Mr. Spano drew a glowing, spacious performance of this Brahms masterwork from the orchestra, marking a great return visit for both him and this essential ensemble." Mahler 9 takes an army of a woodwind section to put on. It calls for 18 separate musicians. As you may know, the ASO's woodwind section at full strength has 16 musicians. We aren't quite back up to 16 players yet, so this week's performance requires us to rely heavily on our fabulous substitute musician pool to fill out the empty seats as well as make up the fifth flute and clarinet parts. Any time you hear a piece by Mahler, anywhere around the world, you are hearing the strength of an orchestra and its substitute/extra musicians. Thank you to our subs, and we can't wait to perform this wonderful piece with you this weekend!
This Thursday, March 31, is another installment of our popular Preconcert Chamber Music Series! This week's 6:45pm preconcert is a selection of French duets to complement our all-French symphony program. We will present Jean Francaix: Cinque piccoli duetti for flute and harp (Christina Smith, flute, and Elisabeth Remy Johnson, harp); Pierre Gabaye: Sonatine pour flute et bassoon (Christina Smith, flute, and Andrew Brady, bassoon); and Maurice Ravel: Movements 1 and 2 from Sonata for violin and cello (Anastasia Agapova, violin, and Karen Freer, cello).
We hope to see you there! The next Preconcert Chamber Music is this Thursday, March 3rd, at 6:45pm onstage. The program will be the world premiere of flutist Rob Cronin's "Five Bagatelles for Alto Flute and Cello" performed by Rob and cellist Danny Laufer; and selections from the Brahms String Sextet No. 2 in G major, op. 36, performed by Jay Christy and David Dillard, violins; Jessica Oudin and Reid Harris, violas; and Brad Ritchie and Larry Lemaster, cello. More information at the link below. Come join us on Thursday!
Aster Trio performs next Tuesday, February 2, 7 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church! Christina Smith (ASO Principal Flute) Danny Laufer (ASO Associate Principal Cello) and I will present an evening of chamber music, ranging from colorful and expansive trios by French composers Ibert and Ravel, to Jean Francaix's intriguing work of five miniature movements for flute and harp, to Bruch's hauntingly beautiful piece "Kol Nidrei", performed on cello and harp. Please join us!
Thursday evening at 6:45pm is our first preconcert chamber program of 2016. Eight of your ATL Symphony Musicians will be performing the Stravinsky "Octet for Wind Instruments." If you have tickets to either Thursday or Saturday's 8pm show, you are invited to join us onstage for an up-close-and-personal chamber performance before Thursday's orchestra concert. Ken Meltzer will be our illustrious and informative host, as always. Don't miss this unique opportunity! — with Todd Skitch, Laura Ardan, Andrew Brady, Laura Najarian, Stuart Stephenson, Michael Tiscione, Nathan Zgonc and Brian Hecht.
On Monday night at 8pm, you can hear Brad Ritchie, Ted Gurch, Charles Settle, and Tom Sherwood perform a FREE concert with Sonic Generator at the Ferst Center on the Georgia Tech campus. They will be performing with the French contemporary music group, Ensemble Variances, as part of the sixth annual France-Atlanta series, which aims to foster innovation and cooperation between France and the Southeastern United States.
More information at http://www.sonicgenerator.gatech.edu/…/sonic-generator-ense… Our first preconcert chamber music performance of the season is Thursday night, October 8, at 6:45pm. Come join us onstage for an up-close-and-personal performance of music by Schubert, Webern, and Mozart by the lovely musicians in this picture.
