More details on $38M grant

Timing of Woodruff Foundation gift was not accidental.
Arts center contribution 2½ years in the making.

By Howard Pousner [email protected]

The nine-week Atlanta Symphony Orchestra lockout spawned its fair share of conspiracy theories about orchestra and Woodruff Arts Center management among supporters of the musicians, often spurred by frequent accusation-filled statements released by the ASO Players’ Association.

So it wasn’t surprising that there was speculation on arts blogs about the timing of the Dec. 5 announcement that the arts center was receiving a $38 million gift from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation.

Robert Spano | Musical America's Profiles In Courage

Congratulations to our own ASO Music Director Robert Spano for being one of Musical America's 2014 Profiles in Courage Recipients! We are so thankful and proud of your courage,
leadership and commitment to excellence.

When Robert Spano arrived at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as music director in 2001, the orchestra was in the doldrums. A music director who stayed too long at the party had left the ensemble divided in its loyalties; morale was at an all-time low; and repertoire was decidedly predictable for a decidedly conservative audience. Enter new-music specialist Spano,
having spent five seasons building the Brooklyn Philharmonic into a highly regarded testing ground for new and unusual repertoire.
